My Journey to Becoming a Tour Guide

People often ask, “How did you become a tour guide?” My story begins in 2019 when I sold my business, initially dreaming of a quiet retirement. However, a trip to London with my wife, Maria, sparked a new chapter. We joined a walking tour that ignited my love for history, connecting with people, and working in the great outdoors. It was a perfect fit!

Creating Torquay’s Unique Walking Tours

Back in Torquay, I learned the town’s only full-time tour guide had retired. Seizing the opportunity, I designed five unique Torquay-themed walks, including a special Agatha Christie Guided Walking Tour. It’s an honour to share her story with visitors who travel from across the globe to fulfil their dreams to immerse themselves in the places that Agatha knew well and which inspired her writing.

And to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Fawlty Towers episode on BBC 2 in 1975, The Fawlty Tours Walking Experience was launched. This tour celebrates arguably the greatest British comedy classic, giving guests the chance to re-live some of the funniest moments and discover how a stay at a Torquay hotel inspired comedy gold.

1,000 tours & 4,000,000 Steps

After 7 years of hosting walking tours, I reached a landmark moment – my 1000th tour!

Each year, I clock up around 4 million steps, leading guided walking tours. This is about 1,600 miles, the equivalent to walking from Torquay to John O’Groats and back again, while talking all the way!

It’s not just the the stunning scenery that makes the tours special, it’s the guests. The enthusiasm and passion which they bring to the tours is so uplifting and helps create very special experiences. We wander along beaches, hidden tracks, and winding coastal paths, with breathtaking views across Paignton and Brixham. The English Riviera is truly a walker’s paradise.
